Every move has the same problem: the stuff you are not taking. The old couch that will not fit the new place, the desk you have outgrown, the mattress you are replacing, the boxes in the closet you never unpacked from the last move. If you leave it all for the last day, it turns into a crisis. Here is a better plan.

## Four weeks out: decide

Walk through every room with the floor plan of your new place in mind. If a piece does not fit or you do not love it, mark it. Movers charge for weight and time, so every item you leave behind saves money on the move itself.

## Three weeks out: sell and donate

List the good pieces online. Schedule charity pickups for usable furniture and household goods, since many charities book up a week or more ahead. Anything that has not sold by the week before the move gets donated or hauled.

## Two weeks out: book the haul away

Schedule your junk removal for the day after the movers leave, or the morning of your last day in the unit. That way everything that did not make the truck goes in one trip. Booking ahead matters most at the end of the month, when a lot of Atlanta leases turn over at once.

## Moving week: handle the hard stuff

- Use up or give away food, cleaning supplies and pantry items.

- Take paint, chemicals and propane to a proper disposal site, since haulers cannot take them. See [this list](what-junk-removal-companies-cannot-take.html).

- Defrost and empty any fridge or freezer that is staying behind to be hauled.

- Take apart bed frames and furniture you are bringing.

## Moving day: clear it and sweep it

Once the movers are gone, the junk crew takes everything left. A good crew will sweep up after, which leaves you ready for a final clean.

## Protect your deposit

Most leases require the unit to be empty. Items left behind can be charged against your security deposit, sometimes at a higher rate than it would have cost you to have them hauled. Take date-stamped photos of the empty unit before you hand in the keys.

## Landlords and realtors
